The Moselle region is considered the oldest wine region in Germany. The cultivation, production and marketing of Moselle wine and wine tourism are important economic factors and an essential part of the region's cultural identity. The history of the wine labels, the wine is identified, described and advertised with, is highly diverse.

Wine Labels as a Silent Witnesses to a Region

Starting from the wine label as a crystallization point of economic, creative and cultural-historical aspects of wine production, the project brings together various actors: university research, individual and institutionalized collections, regional wine industry and tourism. The aim is to activate wine labels as a starting point for digital cultural-historical research and regional tourism promotion.

Within the framework of the pilot project described here, an initial stock of historical wine labels from the Moselle region will first be digitized. This inventory will be made accessible via a detailed metadata model and a mapping of the labels will be carried out so that the inventory becomes precisely searchable. The inventory will be made freely accessible on a website. The cultural, economic, historical, aesthetic and linguistic dimensions of the labels will be analyzed. At the same time, existing contacts with relevant actors in the region will be developed in order to contextualize the collection and integrate the wine industry and tourism.

The project is based at the Trier Center for Digital Humanities, which has been scientifically indexing and analyzing the textual and non-textual cultural heritage in numerous projects since its foundation in 1998. Some relevant, more recent or ongoing projects in the field of Digital Cultural Heritage Studies focus on historical art of projection, the medieval library holdings of the Trier Abbey of St. Matthias or Digital Literary History.
